Here's a guide to set up fcitx5 with Vietnamese Telex on your Arch-based system:

1. Install fcitx5 packages

# Install core fcitx5 and Vietnamese input method
sudo pacman -S fcitx5 fcitx5-unikey fcitx5-configtool fcitx5-qt fcitx5-gtk

# Optional but recommended for better integration
sudo pacman -S fcitx5-im  # This installs the full input method suite

2. Set environment variables

Add these lines to ~/.pam_environment (or ~/.xprofile if that doesn't work):
-- ~/.pam_environment works for me

GTK_IM_MODULE DEFAULT=fcitx
QT_IM_MODULE  DEFAULT=fcitx
XMODIFIERS    DEFAULT=\@im=fcitx
SDL_IM_MODULE DEFAULT=fcitx
GLFW_IM_MODULE DEFAULT=ibus  # For some applications

export GTK_IM_MODULE=fcitx
export QT_IM_MODULE=fcitx

3. Auto-start fcitx5

# Enable autostart
cp /usr/share/applications/org.fcitx.Fcitx5.desktop ~/.config/autostart/

Or add to your window manager/desktop startup commands:

fcitx5 &

4. Configure fcitx5

# Log out and log back in, then run:
fcitx5-configtool

In the configuration tool:

1. Click "Add Input Method"
2. Uncheck "Only Show Current Language"
3. Search for "Unikey" or "Vietnamese"
4. Add "Vietnamese (Unikey)"
5. Click on Unikey in the list → Configure button
6. Make sure Input Method is set to "Telex"

5. Usage

• Switch between English/Vietnamese: Ctrl + Space (default)
• Temporarily turn off Vietnamese: Ctrl + Shift
• Configure hotkeys in fcitx5-configtool → Global Options

Troubleshooting

If it's not working after logging back in:

# Check if fcitx5 is running
ps aux | grep fcitx5

# Manually start it
fcitx5 &

# Check diagnostics
fcitx5-diagnose
