This is the old way of typing unicode characters. It was definitely working with v2. I think somwhere around v3.2 we changed the complete font handling and now we support the complete set of emojis and symbols. Actually I'm not aware if the old style of unicode input deliberately has been dropped or if it just broke, but currently you can just enter emojis like you would in any other text editor.
You e.g. can copy them at windows hit Win-. to open the emoji input. 🤞
