auto-compacting failure

Instead of auto-compacting, the following error will often occur: “creating chat completion: error, status code: 400, status: 400 Bad Request, message: the request exceeds the available context size, try increasing it”

I think this fix i had made some time ago would've addressed this issue: #206

@rumpl had thoughts around this though
