Changing the versions.json file often does not reflected in version menu for some time

Summary

After changing the versions.json file, e.g. adding a new version, and deploying the site it takes some time until the version is shown correctly in the selector drop-down list. The forwarding to new version is done like documented in mike and the URL is correct, but previous version is shown in the selector drop-down list.

Configuration and Logs

• Repository: private
• Platform: GitLab
• mike version: latest = 2.1.3

Steps to Reproduce

1. change the version.json (add new, and adapt forwarding to new)
2. build the site
3. deploy to S3 bucket or GitLab pages
4. open the target URL
5. The URL shows new version in path, but selector drop-down list shows and selects previous version

Expected Behavior

1. the version selector should reflect new version in short time / instant after upload

If that's the case, then this is all working as expected from mike's point of view. Mike just manages the files in your gh-pages branch and doesn't have anything to do with how your browser caches the data, or how your server sets HTTP headers like Cache-Control. You might try looking into your GitLab or S3 configurations.

yes, i see and now it's clear it's not an mike feature to load the version file 👍

So the logic to load the version.json and create a drop-down menu must be somewere in the material design theme or mkdocs in a js file, may be there is an issue with handling some caching / cookie etc., need to check there...

Yeah, it's possible that the Material theme could do something about this. It looks like it's using XMLHttpRequest internally, so maybe it could set caching parameters.

In fact, upon further consideration, there's probably something to do in mike itself; I could add cache: "no-cache" to the fetch calls for the version selector for the built-in themes. That wouldn't help you much, since it sounds like you use the Material theme, but it would help users of the built-in themes.
