Overwritten apfs partition recovery

Hi,

I have an APFS volume (spinning rust drive) that has been reformatted as a new APFS volume but no new data was written to it. (It was a backup/ data only volume). A block level inspection seems to show some if not most of the underlying file data still remains.

What is the process for recovery? I have made a dd image and am working from that. I just need a starting point and direction of how drat might be used in this case. I'm happy to help with developing documentation as I go to help others in a similar situation. I can code if needed but it's not my day job so anything I code will likely be rudimentary.
