__doc__ customization

Is there a way to customize the __doc__?
I tried something along the lines of

@jpype.JImplementationFor("a.b.c.MyClass")
class MyClassCustomizer(object):

    def __jclass_init__(cls):
        from a.b.c.documentation import Javadoc
        javaclass = cls.class_
        javadoc = str(Javadoc.of().getDocumentation(javaclass))
        # printing 'javadoc' here shows the correct javadoc

        cls.__doc__ = javadoc
        #cls._customize("__doc__", javadoc)  # also has no effect

But this leads to

>>> m = MyClass()
>>> m.__doc__
>>> ...

That is, no output is shown.

Sorry for the delay on this. The wheels sort of fell of on the govt and they decided to terminate all my multi-year projects at the end of the fiscal year, so I have been entirely booked trying to produce a wrap up report for four projects simultaneously. I will hopefully get back once October rolls around and suddenly discover I have copious amounts of “free” time.
