Use of dates - notifications

So are the dates simply to be used in sorting? I was testing with these and the reminders plugin but did not see that I received any system wide or even application wide notification. I am on deb on a Chromebook but also using on Android. Would be great to allow for integration with system notifications, reminders & calendar integration much like Google Keep but I realize this is a big ask! THank you
