Issue building XPress: "invalid target release: 17"

I tried building XPress, which resulted in the error below:

$ mvn package

Is this because of the required Java version?

$ java --version
openjdk 11.0.21 2023-10-17

Yes, I think so. I used Java 17. Also, the tests are not correctly written (some are out of date and I haven't cleaned up). So add -Dmaven.test.skip to mvn package -Dmaven.test.skip to skip tests for build.
