Character class shortcut '\u' doesn't work

'\u' is the unicode prefix. This is supposed to be the upper case ascii characters.

Need to change this to another letter.

U doesn’t work either. Actually \u works if the backslash is escaped : \\u. It would be useful to mention it in the documentation.

I'll implement U as an alias for u (no escape required) and mention that with \u escape is required: \\u.

The latest version on pypi includes documentation for resolutions:

• Use a raw string for \u, like: r"[\u]{8}"
• Use the new alias \U
• Escape with double backslash \\u

The \U alias doesn’t work, it needs to be escaped as well :

SyntaxError: (unicode error) 'unicodeescape' codec can't decode bytes in position 1-2: truncated \UXXXXXXXX escape
