ipywidgets is untyped

Related to #321. ipywidgets does not use type annotations. This trips up mypy in a bunch of places.
If we want mypy to pass, we will have to place type: ignore directives everywhere that ipywidgets is used.

This issue is meant for considering whether this is a reason for not trying to pass mypy.
