I was also able to find the code which calls these functions:

d_a_b tests if the cosmetic elements that should contain the ads are removed/hidden, while d_a_b2 tests if various network requests related to loading the ads are blocked. Assuming these tests pass, both functions then call append_notice() which actually does the replacement of the page with the detection notice.
