WIP work towards #2177. It also changes quite a bit how we manage the layout in the CSS.
We should also figure out what we should do if you have a page in the navigation that does not have any child pages. The easy option is to just throw an error in that case. Currently we're left with an empty sidebar, which looks a bit strange.
