(modeling after how Unique.hs handled the same situation)
Also works with ghc 7.6.3 and 7.10.1. And I've gotten the interpreter itself to compile and run with ghc 7.4.1, but the code the interpreter generates on 7.4.1 fails to compile. (Strangely, the code the compiler generates on 7.4.1 compiles fine.)
