Done some reading on this plugin (logstash-plugins/logstash-filter-grok#105) grok patterns is a popular logstash plugin. Feature is disabled by default so not impacting existing deployments. /etc/logstash/patterns typically contains grok pattern declarations. It is probably okay to remove /etc/logstash/patterns - if grok patterns are needed pillars can be defined. This is worthwhile feature
