I noticed that dateFormat, listed in the readme file, is never used. (Or did I misunderstand something there?)

I used toLocaleDateString(), like you already did, so dateFormat defines the object to use for this function.

Sorry, I just realized that this will break existing installations. Is that a problem?

Fixed: It's now backwards compatible. If dateFormat is not an object, it reverts to the previous behavior.
